Now that the holidays are over, and school is back in session, we come to the other annual winter tradition -- the yearly assault of school illnesses!  My husband and I often joke that our kids are sick every year from November through May. Having just been visited by a particularly nasty virus, I know what it's like keeping a houseful of kids entertained while you (and they) recuperate.  To help you stay sane, we have our selection of great apps from the last few weeks below.  We hope you all manage to stay healthy during this new year!

One new app that is sure to keep any kid occupied is Monsters of Rock, the new Luna Kettlebottom and the Magical Cauldron Society adventure. We are huge Luna fans at TheiPhoneMom and eagerly await each new installment in these fairytale inspired stories.  Luna interactive stories are always high quality and free to encourage reading while the games have a small cost.  A full review is forthcoming, but meanwhile enjoy Monsters of Rock today!

Do you have an adventure lover in your house? Treasure Kai and the Lost Gold of Shark Island is a modern day twist on the classic Choose Your Own Adventure Stories. As Treasure Kai is hunting for the lost gold he will get to choose to open one of several treasure chests. The choices he makes will determine the path the rest of the story takes.

The Lost Gold of Shark Island is the first of several adventures in store for Treasure Kai. The Seven Cities of Gold is currently available and King Tut’s Treasure will be coming soon to the App Store.

From our tech partners, we have some great tips this month.  Does your iPhone always seem to be out of juice at the end of the day?  Here are 5 smart tips to prolong your battery life. Want to make the most out of your new iPhone? Check out these six iPhone features; the headphone tips were helpful to me! Finally, there was a recent report on children's apps tracking users action.  This article lays out the details and suggests way to minimize this problem.

Pookie's Snow Day

Just in time for the frigid temperatures that many of us are experiencing right now, little readers and pre-readers will love helping Pookie the hedgehog find his way home before winter comes. Soothing narration and music help to make this a fantastic bedtime book that kids will love to read and play over and over again.

Grammaropolis

“Noun town what’s that sound, a person, place or thing is found in noun town." Grammaropolis animates the parts of speech giving them personalities based on the roles they play in a sentence. Each part of speech has its own neighborhood, and within that neighborhood is a map that combines traditional grammar instruction and quizzes with award-winning songs, books, and videos. Nouns are included as a free download, so try it out with your primary school kid!
Audiobooks HQ

Audiobooks HQ

Although it doesn't offer the bestsellesr that audible.com does, Audiobooks HQ offers 5,000 audio books for just the cost of the app ($1.99). The catalogs in the library contain listings available on the public domain, offered through LibriVox. Their goal is to make all public domain books available as free audio books and you can contact them if you wish to offer your time and talents, through the seller’s link.

Bedtime Bunny Tales:

Tortoise and the Hare HD
In this adaptation of the classic story of The Tortoise and the Hare, Grandpa Bunny invites you into his cozy nook (that smells of chocolate and cinnamon) just in time for story time. This beautifully illustrated app is the perfect way to settle down for a long winter’s nap or help your kids mellow out in time for bed.

Kidomatic

Kidomatic is an easy-to-use program designed for kids and teens who want to have a little fun with the pictures on their mobile devices. My kids and I had so much fun taking pictures of each other and transforming those pictures into funny works of art with the tools in Kidomatic.
Eat Sleep

Eat Sleep

Here's a great app for any new parent!  Eat Sleep is a log to record baby’s eating, sleeping and diaper routine and help you keep track of those sleepless days and nights. It’s simple to set up your child’s profile and you can even include a picture of your little cherub. Entering data is as easy as touching a button. Press the bottle to record feedings, the crib for sleeping, safety pin for diapers, and the syringe for medications.

As always, generous developers offer promo codes for free apps to readers of theiphonemom! Enter our rafflecopters to win any of these great apps. We have three great apps featured this week: Barnyard Bluegrass which has updated their musical app, Doctor Cat and Vampire - Kids Story Book.

Lulu in the Amazon

Lulu and Zazou (her cat) are going on an adventure to a new land: the Amazon! Come along with Lulu and Zazou as they learn all about the rainforest and the animals and people that live there, as well as their customs and culture. The book features 20 interactive and animated pages, as well as five games within the story for added fun.

 It's Epic...and it's a clock, It's Epic Clock!

Wow...how cheesy of me.

Anyway, I don't know if you know but...we have another little app that just keeps getting a little more popular each day. It's animated and you can set the sound-birds chirping, waterfalls, etc. My husband, Sam created this painting years ago and just recently made it an app. I have the original hanging in my bedroom. I'm lucky to have an artist hubby! Check it out...
